Kant on the future of representative democracy

Kant’s Staatsrecht in his “Metaphysics of Morals” likely represents the sharpest analysis and critique democratic modernity after 1789. At same time, it provides a unique outlook on future modern representative democracy. This has gone largely unnoticed, with scholars often lamenting problematic nature late text, blamed either author’s supposed senility or inscrutable composition resulting from confusion during printing process. Rather than affirming these readings, I will argue that they are merely attempts to wrestle brilliance philosophical rhetoric. Through new reading key passage Staatsrecht, substantiate this claim by reconstructing account repres- entative democracy its future.
